Fish quarantine tank
Most people would simply dismiss the need of a fish quarantine tank. But those who have faced a scenario where all the fishes of their tank were wiped off in a matter of just two days would understand the need of it. The quarantine tank is used to get your new fish introduced to the similar atmosphere as your aquarium. This way while your new fish is getting used to the new environment, it also stays in isolation giving you the opportunity to look for any sign of sickness. Whereas if the new fish is directly put in the new tank and gets sick, then it will also make the other fishes in the tank get sick and you just might lose all your hard work. Just as it is important to get a horse insurance if you own an equine, it is important as per me to have a quarantine tank if you have fish. While it is highly important to have a quarantine tank for salt water fishes, it is generally considered prudent to have one even for the fresh water fishes.
Another benefit of having a quarantine tank is if and when you find a fish that is showing signs of disease; you can carry it over to the quarantine tank and treat it over there. By doing this you will have saved the other fishes from being exposed to the medicine and the disease. This is also true for the new fishes that you bring from the pet store. A very important step while quarantining a fish which has already been in the tank is to make sure the water in your quarantine tank is the same as in your aquarium. After you have treated your fish and the disease is cleared up, the fish may still die when you put it back into the aquarium as it would be another sudden environmental change for it. So you would have to work upon acclimating it back into the aquarium. So the best option over here is to get the water for you quarantine tank from the main aquarium, while refilling it slowly and steadily.
